The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) has made a significant impact on the health and well-being of millions of women, children and infants since its inception in 1974. General Mills supports the goals of the program in several ways.
We offer over a dozen well-loved, wholesome cereals that meet federal requirements for use in the WIC program, including Cheerios, Kix, Total and Chex. All General Mills Big G cereals are made with whole grain.
General Mills believes in the importance of nutrition education as a component of WIC, and are committed to making complimentary nutrition education materials available for distribution in WIC clinics.
We believe strongly in the nutrition benefits that fortified cereals provide to WIC participants, making cereal an integral part of the program’s success. Cereal provides essential nutrients for the health of women and children, such as iron, calcium, and B-vitamins including folic acid. Research has shown that people who eat cereal frequently are better off nutritionally than those who eat cereal less often, getting more of their daily nutrition needs from cereal and having healthier body weights.
