A Day in a Life of a Nutritionist: the Food Route from Ayrshire to Australia

Stevie Lorraine Wring

If you regard food as a key ingredient of overall wellbeing, you probably look for an expert’s seal of approval on any new recipe or nutrition advice. In the USA, these experts are known as RDNs, but in other countries dietitians and nutritionists take different training courses, and follow distinct regulations. To understand what it’s like to be a food expert, and what they do, we dive into the world of one: nutritionist Stevie Wring. Hailing from Ayrshire, Scotland, she is now settled in Australia, and it was precisely her work that took her to the other side of the globe.

  1. What is your current role?
I am a health and nutrition manager at Woolworths, a food retailer with over 1000 supermarkets in Australia and New Zealand. So, it’s quite a big offering. It is really a big company to work for, and very exciting.
  2. How did you get started in the nutrition industry?
I studied BSc (Hons) in Public Health Nutrition in Scotland. As a registered nutritionist, I started my career working in public health for the National Health Service, for the UK government in education campaigns. Then I transferred over to the food industry, working as a nutritionist for Kellogg’s, in their UK and Europe offices before I transferred to Australia. After that, I joined Woolworths, where I’ve been for about three years.
  3. Describe your typical day at work.
A typical day working as a nutritionist in retail doesn’t exist. The role is truly cross-functional. I am involved in product development, product reformulation, developing communications, supporting marketing campaigns, exploring customer insights and everything in between.
  4. What is the most challenging part of your work?
It is easy to be really busy and stretched because we look after every category that you sell in a supermarket, and all the marketing and campaigns and regulations are attached to that. It’s great because it is so diverse, but I think it is really important to try and remain focused on the areas that I can add the most value.
  5. What aspect do you enjoy the most?
The relationships I’ve built. Being a nutritionist in retail allows me to work with many different people, within the business and externally, such as great researchers, healthcare professionals, and public care groups. We work together to create a better shop environment for customers, and to support customers in making healthier choices. That sense of purpose is very rewarding to me, and that’s what I enjoy the most.
  6. What is your favourite meal?
I love food. I love fish and vegetables but, I’ve got to be honest, I would say that a great meal for me isn’t complete without a little delicious dessert. I’m so lucky to live in Sydney in Australia because we have such inspiring produce, and the restaurant and café culture is absolutely fabulous. Something that I’ve adopted since living here is the breakfast-out-at-the-weekend culture.
  7. Tell us your most memorable moment from work.
I’ve had the opportunity to move around the world because of my job: from Scotland to England, and travelling to different countries in Europe… Moving to Australia was truly memorable.
  8. If you had an extra hour a day, how would you spend it?
I would be playing in a park, and having fun with my husband and my boys.
